Canine Leaders in now in the process of building an organization that focuses on providing well-trained Guide and Skills dogs to those in need. The name of this company is Canine Leaders Freedom Dogs (CLFD), watch for our seperate website which is coming soon.

CLFD is a progressing company whose mission is to provide a high quality of service by improving the quality of life and assisting the visually impaired by providing independence with a specially trained dog. We are providing freedom,, one dog at a time, by taking the "dis" out of disability!

Traditional non-profit organizations have a 5-10 year waiting list. We offer a quicker alternative for those in need.

What is a Guide Dog?

Guide dogs, or seeing eye dogs, are assistance dogs specially trained to lead blind, or visually impaired people, around obstacles.

What are the unique abilities of a Guide Dogs?

Our dogs are extremely smart! In addition to learning how to lead a person safely around obstacles, Guide Dogs are also trained in "intelligence disobedience" - if they are given a command that may be unsafe to follow through on, they are taught to not obey it (for example: refusing to step out into the street when there is oncoming traffic). This is also known as selective obedience. Guide Dogs are also trained to have very, very good manners (for all those times they must visit public places, such as restaurants, grocery stores, and public transportation), and are capable of avoiding distractions (such as cats!). In addition, all Guide Dogs possess an eagerness to please and a willingness to work. They love what they do! When their harness is on they are strictly business, but when it comes off, they are just like any other dog
.

At Canine Leaders we recognize that there are not enough guide dog organizations  and that there is a real shortage of well-trained guide dogs for the thousands of blind people in need. This is why we are committed to do whatever we can to fulfill this need, even if it is only by putting 4 or 5 dogs a year in the hands of people who really need them.

We have just recently trained Ontario's first dual purpose wheelchair guide dog. Guide dogs have been trained in, both Canada, and the USA, for over 73 years, but it is only in the last 15 years that anyone started doing any training for wheelchair guide work. An organization called Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc. pioneered this training and continue to train these specialized dogs to this day. However, they only train one wheelchair guide dog per year, and they have an extremely long waiting list.

Canine Leaders is one of the only schools in Canada that trains dual purpose guide dogs and the only one in Ontario.

Thank you for your interest in the Canine Leaders Freedom Dogs program. We are an organization dedicated to matching trained guide dogs with visually impaired individuals at no charge to the recipient. Canine Leaders is supported by donations from individuals, clubs, and other groups, and does not receive any provincial or federal grants.

NOTE:

We are currently seeking as much help as possible in this area of our company.

We are interested in finding sponsors. We also could use some determined people to join our fundraising committee. Since we are not a non-profit organization, we must raise the money ourselves, which can be quite challenging at times. However, with the right team of people, we will be able to help put more Guide dogs per year into a harness for those in need.

Are you willing to assist with fundraising efforts in your area? From selling raffle tickets to working at a fundraising event, volunteers are needed to raise money for the many costs associated with Canine Leaders Freedom Dogs, such as vet care, food, boarding, training, harnesses, dog kennels, etc.
